Easy Blackberry Cobbler Recipe

Cobbler like this one are a comforting way to end your meal. How do you make Blackberry Cobbler? You can use fresh or frozen blackberries for this recipe. First, allow them to break down and macerate with granulated sugar for a bit while you make the batter. The batter is made using simple pantry ingredients such as all purpose flour, salt, baking powder, granulated sugar and eggs. A touch of nutmeg and fragrant vanilla extract adds just enough flavor to set it apart. Melt the butter in the baking dish, then add the batter and dollop the berries on top and bake it until it’s beautifully golden. (Scroll down for full printable recipe.)

  • Macerate Blackberries – In a medium bowl, toss together blackberries with 1/2 cup granulated sugar until well coated. Let stand for 15-20 minutes or until juice begins to form. (You can mash 1/2-1 cup of additional blackberries and add to them to the berries for an extra juicy cobbler.)
  • Melt Butter- Melt the butter and pour into a 13 x 9 inch baking pan, swirl to coat bottom and sides.
  • Make Batter – In a medium bowl whisk together remaining 1/2 cup sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, milk, vanilla and egg until fully blended. Pour into pan with butter.

How to Make the Best Blackberry Cobbler Recipe

  • Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Blackberry Cobbler: Fresh or frozen blackberries, all purpose flour, granulated sugar, melted butter, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, milk, egg, vanilla extract, large egg and vanilla ice cream for serving.
  • Kitchen tools you’ll need: Two medium bowls, whisk, measuring cups and spoons, a 13 x 9 inch baking dish, rubber spatula and spoon for dropping the blackberries into the batter.
  • To make the cobbler super juicy, you may opt to crush 1/2-1 cup of additional blackberries and add them to the filling. When doing so, the batter will absorb the color from the juice.
  • When choosing the best blackberries, choose berries that aren’t crushed or bruised and firm when gently squeezed. Also, look for mold or anything that looks as if the berries may be old. If there are stains on the packaging the blackberries are breaking down and likely aren’t fresh.
  • You can use frozen blackberries in this recipe. They should be thawed prior to using.
  • Expect some of the berries to burst while baking. This is normal and isn’t an indication that anything went wrong.
  • Blackberry Cobbler is best made and eaten straight from the oven while fresh. Should you have any leftover, you can reheat leftovers in the microwave in single serving portions.
  • You can store this cobbler for up to 3 days chilled in the refrigerator.
