emccarron | emccarron Member 2010-Jan-26 11:47 pm [modem/router] Noticing a pattern... Net connectivity drops inte...rmittently... I don't seem to be the only one having this prob, which makes me feel a bit better. Status says "connection pending." Verizon tells me to cycle power on modem -- a solution I find unacceptable. Xcvr status -- seems the same up or down: Transceiver Revision A2pB020b3.d20h Transceiver InformationDown Stream PathUp Stream Path If I wait 5 or 10 minutes, it comes back. Typically, with a new IP address. Wiring seems physically clean - I ran a new shielded cat 3 from the nid to the modem, and placed a single filter on the rest of the house at the demarc -- I work on phone systems for a living and know enough to be dangerous. Any ideas? |

Looking at OpenDNS's IP changelog, today for example, I've had 6 different IPs between 3am and 7am. Seems excessive. On the plus side, I've taught my wife to reboot from the browser to save me a trip to modem each time. |

| emccarron Member 2010-Jan-27 7:45 am Yet more info... Just dropped again. Grabbed these statistics: Transceiver InformationDown Stream PathUp Stream Path Now, I'm no expert, but that looks odd. Unfortunately, my wife rebooted the modem as I was digging for more info. Guess I shouldn't have taught her that trick. The DSL light did indeed drop momentarily on this one. No correspondence to phones ringing or anything. Next step is to isolate EVERYTHING from the modem... |

| Smith6612 to emccarron MVM 2010-Jan-27 7:47 am Your margin for having ADSL2+ on that short of a line seems to be very low. If you have a NID, can you plug the modem into that? |

emccarron | emccarron Member 2010-Jan-27 8:01 am No NID, just an old arrestor -- but I'll disconnect everything else, hang a jack directly from it, and report back. Thanks! |

| emccarron Member 2010-Jan-27 8:23 am And, with the modem back where it belongs: Transceiver InformationDown Stream PathUp Stream Path 11.6 to 13.1 ... Assuming higher s/n is better, 50% more signal? Wonder if I had a loose/oxidized connection and all my shuffling cleaned it up? For some reason, my gut tells me it won't make a difference. |

| Smith6612 to emccarron MVM 2010-Jan-27 8:59 am It didn't seem to make much of a difference so I wouldn't think that your home's wiring may be causing the problem. Do you have voice service however? If so, do you hear noise such as buzzing or static on it? |
· actions · 2010-Jan-27 8:59 am · | |
emccarron | emccarron Member 2010-Jan-27 9:11 am Nope. Voice is clean. Perhaps a -tiny- 60hz hum, but I have to break dialtone, cover one ear, and strain to hear it. I've heard worse. My next step is to replace the old primary arrestor with a new gas tube one and see what happens. If I'm connected to the CO I assume I am, I can just about spit on it - can't be more than 3000' away from me, as the crow flies. |

| emccarron Member 2010-Jan-27 12:12 pm Replaced the arrestor. New stats: DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec)3358863 Heck of a jump on downstream. Lets see what happens. |
